Finally, Planking is Done!!

The completed hull on the left and the in-progress hull on the right.

The planking stage is always a grind. The goal with this type of plank-on-bulkhead construction is to cover the entire hull with thin strips of wood. Each one is individually shaped, glued, and temporarily clamped into place. It is important to alternate adding strips to the port and starboard sides of the hull to keep the lateral forces balanced. This prevents the keel from forming a curve (I’ve learned that one the hard way).

This entire stage is repetitious and boring. I started in September and finally wrapped up in February. Other work on the project has progressed (I will post more about that soon), but I am very relieved that this stage is complete. With the hull closed up, the project will begin to accelerate since everything can now be affixed to it.
